WHAT DOES THE COURSE PROVIDE?

The course aims to prepare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students educationally, culturally and personally to undertake formal study and employment and to develop the confidence and self-esteem required to meet the competencies expected in their role.

 Specifically the course will provide students with the:

*   concept of Aboriginal Health and primary health care as a career
*   understanding of the effects of Aboriginality on specific areas of health care
*   knowledge of Torres Strait Islander Health Issues
*   knowledge of community needs & client interaction
*   awareness of cultural safety & cultural sensitivity.

PRE-REQUISITE REQUIREMENTS

This qualification is proposed for workers with some breadth and depth of skills and knowledge in assessment and treatment of a wide range of presenting health problems for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities.

Workers seeking enrolment in or credit for this qualification must be able to demonstrate competence in the following competency units from Certificate III:

HLTOHS300A Contribute to OHS processes
HLTAHW302A Facilitate communication between clients and service providers
HLTAHW304A Undertake basic health assessments

WORK APPLICATION

Certificate IV may be regarded by jurisdictions as the level at which an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health worker may function independently.

To be assessed as competent in this qualification, individual workers are required to undertake supervised work placements in a primary health care setting, supplemented where required by simulated practical application of skills and knowledge. Individuals must demonstrate consistency of performance over time to achieve competency outcomes.

TRAINING DELIVERY AND ASSESSMENT

This training is offered, either by work based or by flexible distance learning. Assessment is competency based. Your Trainer/Assessor will provide you with the information required for this qualification.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Our students are our main priority and as such, we endeavour to support them in their studies. A variety of student support methods is offered, from ongoing one on one tutorial support as arranged between Tutor and student by making an appointment, and group support when required. A Tutor is available to answer and assist with any questions the student may have.

QUALIFICATION

On completion of the course, the student will receive a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Care (Community Care). Those who complete only part of the course will receive a Statement of Attainment for units completed.
